![Post Traumatic Stress]() |
by Sheryl Mullin
“PTSD is treatable,” states Sheryl Mullin, owner of InFocus Counseling. “Treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is very successful.”
The trauma might be physical abuse, emotional abuse or observing a violent act. The traumatic event(s) might have happened either in childhood or as an adult. If not dealt with, a person can develop PTSD. While PTSD often affects veterans, anyone who has experienced a trauma-based event can develop PTSD.
The trauma does not just disappear in time. People think if they give it a couple years they will not think about it anymore. PTSD can cause pain, physiologically, emotionally and spiritually. Sheryl has seen it cause back aches, neck aches, facial tics and more.

![Meet Owner/Counselor Sheryl Mullin]() |
|
Sheryl Mullin is an experienced mediator, with skills in reconciliation while working with couples. “When I see couples go through a reconciliation process, and know that they have dealt with real issues – other than who’s going to do the dishes or take care of the house – it’s very rewarding.”
The change in people’s lives
The change in people’s lives is what fuels Sheryl’s desire to counsel. “When people identify what is really happening, then deal with their root issues, I love to see the change in their lives. They feel better about themselves – and they look better. Their demeanor is better, they hold themselves better, and sometimes their skin coloring is better. It’s awesome to see the change both emotionally and physically.”

![Meet our Counselors Betty Willis]() |
Betty believes InFocus Counseling has a very good perspective on holistic health. “We do not separate mental health from all the other parts of a person’s life,” she explains. “For instance, we understand that if you have a physical illness, it can affect your mental well-being.”
While some agencies make a sharp differentiation between mental and behavioral issues and services, InFocus looks at the whole person. This includes mind, body, spirit, relationships, family, workplace, goals and dreams, etc.
Insightful counseling
Betty is glad to hear her clients tell her, ‘what you asked me to do really helped.’ Betty says her life experiences, education and the range of clients she has seen have prepared her to be an insightful counselor.

The Need to be Loved |
“The need to be loved is a need that is often not being met,” Sheryl Mullin, owner of InFocus Counseling, explains.
“That comes up in counseling a lot. We see it in a lot of different forms other than the need to be loved.”
Clients might say ‘this person doesn’t appreciate me, they don’t see how hard I work, they do not respect me’, but their perception comes from their need to be loved.
“People have holes in their lives,” Sheryl explains. That causes the addictions, alcoholism, mannerisms, and behaviors that are symptomatic of something deeper. The deeper things are usually unresolved issues relating to the need to be loved.
People need to be loved, they want to be cared for and they want to be valued. Many people did not have that growing up.”
Sheryl and her team of therapists at InFocus Counseling help people identify the real issues in their lives and find hope and healing.

New Building in 2011 |
InFocus Counseling and First Call Home Health will be building a new facility into which they will move in late 2011.
“Our new building is going to be wonderful, because everyone will have spacious, well-lit counseling rooms” Sheryl explains.
The play therapy rooms in the new building will be ‘kid friendly’ – roomy, with sand boxes. “When kids who have been traumatized come in every week, they’re going to love it. They love the room we have now, but I am very excited about the new ones.”
The agency will have a classroom with a full kitchen and the ability to serve lunch, coffee or tea, as well as hold classes. The building will have plenty of parking and have all the latest technology for presentations in an acedemic setting.
